Enjoying Healthier Food On The Go

I travel constantly for work, which hasn't been great for my waistline. After eating in all of the best restaurants in the world for a few years, I realized that I had gained around 30 pounds. Fortunately, I was able to work with a health coach who taught me some valuable skills for my way of life. She taught me how to recognize unhealthy foods and swap them out for better options--even in foreign hotels. The results were incredible. I was able to lose weight while enjoying my travel adventures. My blog is for anyone out there who wants to enjoy healthier food on the go.

6 Tips For Eating Healthier At A Mexican Restaurant

by Margie Harris

Mexican food is a favorite among many Americans, but it is not exactly the healthiest cuisine. Before you know it, you can consume thousands of calories in just one sitting. However, that doesn't mean you can't eat at Mexican restaurant without completely sabotaging your diet. Here are six tips for eating healthier at a Mexican restaurant:

Choose Soft Tortillas

If you are in the mood for tacos, ask for them to be made with soft tortillas. These tortillas are a much healthier choice because they are baked. Crunchy tortillas, on the other hand, are fried. Opting for soft tortillas for your tacos can help you avoid eating too many calories.

Say No to the Chips

It may be difficult, but telling the server to leave the chips in the kitchen is a smart choice. Chips served at a Mexican restaurant are usually fried and packed with sodium, which can really sabotage your healthy eating habits. These chips can also be very addicting, so it is difficult to just eat a few.

Pick Healthier Sides

Rice and refried beans are the typical sides for Mexican dishes, but they can add a lot of extra calories. If you are trying to eat healthier, it is a wiser choice to opt for black beans or salad on the side. These foods have fewer calories and are filled with more nutrients.

Order Grilled Items

Instead of ordering chimichangas or quesadillas, ask your server to bring you a grilled entree. You are likely to find several grilled items, including chicken and fish, on a Mexican restaurant menu. Grilled items can save you at least a few hundreds calories and taste delicious.

Skip the Margaritas

Margaritas may be popular drinks to order at a Mexican restaurant, but they are not exactly diet friendly. Just one drink can set you back a few hundred calories. Margaritas are also filled with sugar and other unhealthy ingredients. If you are trying to watch your diet, it is best to say no to the margaritas and stick with water.

Watch Your Guacamole Intake

Guacamole may be packed with healthy fats, but it is also high in calories. If you eat too much of it, you could end up consuming too many calories for the day. Try not to eat more than one or two teaspoons of guacamole.

If you follow these tips, you can eat better at a Mexican restaurant. Contact a local restaurant like El Chico Cafe or another location to check the nutritional information on other menu items.
